Oh Happy Day!

Oh Happy Day!

I am not sure if you noticed the cover of "The Harvard Business Review" this month.  The entire issue is devoted to happiness.  You might wonder what the message this issue delivers.  It's simple:  If you work towards a positive environment for your people, your organization will perform better and your people will have a higher level of performance (in a sustainable manner).  In addition, your employees will be more productive, turnover will be lower.  Basically, you'll be setting your organization up for success.

The issue has a great article from Shawn Achor (who is the host of our new program "The Happiness Advantage") as well as interesting articles by Justin Fox, Gretchen Spreitzer, and Peter Stearns.

As I read the magazine, I was really fascinated by an interview with Daniel Gilbert, the author of "Stumbling on Happiness."  The interview reinforced some of the lessons I'd already learned about the power of happiness.  In the interview, you'll learn more about how happiness works and how you can be happier.  I was also interested in Daniel Gilbert's comments about managers.  He reminds us how much better reward is for employees as opposed to threats.  Using positive feedback and rewards is a much more effective way to stimulate

Which brings me to the next cool news item.  Shawn Achor's "Talk of the Day" on TED has had over 55,000 views.  If you haven't seen it, Click Here

Help Spread Happiness with The Happiness Campaign

Many of you have already previewed our new program, The Happiness Advantage.

I have to say, I really love the messages in this program. I love the fact that the scientific data shows that we actually perform better at work when we’re happier. It is really amazing. I particularly like the ways in which we can all do simple things to improve our happiness.

The thing that has worked best for me recently is exercise. Shawn Achor not only says that exercise makes you happier, it actually improves your cognitive abilities. I am not sure if I am any smarter after I exercise, but I know I feel better!

What do I do for exercise? I swim. I know, some of you think swimming can be a little tedious. I used to as well. But, I have found a way to fix this! I now listen to music on my iPod when I swim. There are a whole bunch of neat ways to do this, but my favorite comes from the website www.h2oaudio.com. If you like to swim, you should check out this website!

But back to the purpose of this blog. We thought is would be a great idea to spread happiness to more people. That’s why we came up with "The Happiness Campaign!"

Shawn Achor speaks about "The Ripple Effect" in his book. Essentially, when you are happier, that positivity ripples out to other people (at work, at home, even to strangers around you). Your happiness makes a difference to others - and everyone will benefit from that!

In order to spread happiness, we have started The Happiness Campaign. It’s designed as an easy way for you to share ideas that spread positivity - and hopefully to let your ideas ripple that positivity out to others. If you have a chance, visit the campaign on Facebook or go to www.thehappinesscampaign.com. Tell us what makes you happy! Share a video or a story and see if your idea spreads to other people.

Wouldn’t it be great if we could help make people a little happier?

You can practice happiness on your iPhone or Android Device

iJournnal application for The Happiness Advantage

We’ve heard from many of you who have seen our new video The Happiness Advantage that you’d like a simple too to work on your happiness habits on a regular basis.

Now you can with the new I Journal application: this new application is designed according to the core principles that renowned author and psychologist Shawn Achor describes in his book "The Happiness Advantage." It’s free to download. Here’s how it can help you:

  • journaling as a means of moving from task-based activities to meaning-based activities
  • write down something you are grateful for every day: gain a more positive perspective on life
  • record how you exercise: boosts your mood and enhances your work performance
  • capture moments of meditation: increases happiness, lowers stress, and can even improve immune function
  • make note of your acts of kindness: feel much happier

Research shows that by practicing these principles, people can increase their productivity and develop a "happiness advantage". Remember, optimistic employees are 31% more productive, take fewer sick days, achieve higher sales and make more money. They perform more accurately on tasks and think smarter. Yet, it’s not this success that makes them happy. In fact, it’s the other way around: happiness comes first, leading to greater success-for themselves, their workgroups and their organizations.

I Journal makes it easier for you to capture text, photos, or voice notes from anywhere you are. Create a free account at Catch.com to enable automatic syncing and the ability to view and edit your journal on the web as well as from your Android devices.

Your notebook can be viewed in forward or reverse chronological order. Your entries can also be location-tagged and shared via email, Facebook, Twitter, and more.

Five Ideas to Improve Happiness, Success, and Performance at Work

Many of us have been told that if we work hard, we’ll be successful, and once we’re successful, then we’ll be happy. But decades of scientific research have proven that this formula is backward. Happiness makes us smarter and more efficient-it actually fuels our success. Shawn Achor, Harvard Professor and host of our new program, The Happiness Advantage has a whole set of strategies that you can use to do this. Here are five:

  1. Practice random acts of kindness: Every time you perform an act of kindness, however small, your brain enjoys a spike in happiness. Write a thank-you note, compliment a colleague’s tie, or drop coins in a stranger’s meter.
  2. Invest in your social relationships: Your social support network (friends and family) are the best predictor of success and happiness. Remember to invest in your social support networks!
  3. Exercise: You know about the physical benefits of exercise, but don’t forget the mental ones: just 30 minutes of exercise can act as an anti-depressant. Another study found that executives who started a regular exercise routine experienced a 70% improvement in their ability to make complex decisions.
  4. Start with small, manageable goals: When you fell stressed and overwhelmed at work, don’t panic. The best way to get control of the situation (and improve your happiness) is to start with small, manageable goals. This helps you gain confidence so you can gradually take on larger and larger tasks.
  5. Avoid Multitasking: We live in a world that almost demands that we multitask... And we can do it: the only problem is, when we attempt to multitask, our brain actually decreases our success rate on both of those tasks. So focus on one task at a time!

These are just a few ideas that you’ll find in our new release, The Happiness Advantage. Our customers have already told us they love the program and are using it in the workplace. We think you’ll agree! Take a look at the free preview and see for yourself.
