Today’s organizations often define leadership and management in the same terms, despite the fact that they require significantly different behaviors. In the context of rapid change, such confusion contributes to underperformance in both leaders and managers. To drive change you need clarity and an approach to engage both head and heart — and the skills to take action. This is the objective behind this program’s three essential deliverables: an understanding of the critical differences between leadership and management; specific leadership skills necessary to motivate change; and the ability to identify and act on a leadership opportunity.

“Leadership and management are two distinctive and complementary systems of action. Each has its own function and characteristic activities. Both are necessary in an increasingly complex and volatile business environment.”

  • John P. Kotter on What Leaders Really Do, Harvard Business Review

Core Content Areas

The session includes practices, interactive exercises, and tools in the following core areas:

Engaging the Head: Building Awareness

Because the volume and pace of change keeps increasing, so does the need for leadership at all levels of the organization. Meanwhile, the job of managing the organization’s day-to-day demands doesn’t let up. This section will help you develop the ability to balance the outlooks and skills of a leader with the perspectives and practices of a manager. In addition, you will identify a leadership opportunity for yourself in your organization — the chance to create a positive change.

Engaging the Heart: Motivating Change

You will identify those individuals who will need to change their behavior for your leadership opportunity to succeed. You will gain an understanding of Kotter’s three basic leadership actions — establishing direction; aligning people; and motivating and inspiring — and use it to address how to engage these individuals.

Planning For Action: Initiating Your Leadership Opportunity

You will create an action plan for turning your leadership opportunity into results and identify immediate next steps towards applying it.

Program Outcomes

After completing the program, participants will be able to:
